Who wants a MAMA when you can win the Grammy?

18 Dec

Who wants a MAMA when you can win the Grammy?

I read Lolade Sowoolu’s “Between Sasha and Nneka” in the Showtime magazine of the Saturday Vanguard on December 18, 2010, and it was quite an interesting critical analysis of how and why the Nigerian rap diva Sasha beat the more internationally acclaimed Nneka to win the Best Female Artiste award at the last MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) in Lagos, Nigeria, making Sasha the first Nigerian to win in the Best Female category after Kenyans dominated it in the last two years. Sowoolu reported that many people thought Nneka should have won the award, because she is considered a more internationally accepted Nigerian artiste as Asa .

Nneka the Nigerian-German hip hop/soul singer and guitarist is a popular artiste internationally, but not locally, because presently majority of her fellow Nigerians and the rest of Africans do not appreciate her kind of music which is more of a revolutionary fusion of modern reggae and hip-hop and her unique style has taken her places from Europe to the US and then to Africa and she won the award for Best African Act at the 2009 MOBO Awards. And Nneka was on the Late Show with David Letterman in New York before her first concert tour of the United States publicized as the Concrete Jungle and she performed shows in New York City, Vienna (Washington DC), Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and San Francisco. And she made the coveted hot list of Rolling Stone and no other Nigerian female artiste has made it and for what Nneka has achieved so far, she is ahead of Asa and Sasha in the world of music. And her ambition is above the MAMA. She is looking forward to winning the Grammy like Sade Adu has done and even a dummy knows that the Grammy is a more globally acclaimed recognition in music than MAMA, MOBO or Channel O.

Sade's Highly Acclaimed SOLDIER OF LOVE Marches On With Two Grammy Nominations

16 Dec

Lest we forget our own Nigerian born Sade Adu received two Grammy nominations for her sixth album Soldier of Love and none of the over hyped FM radio and TV stations in Nigeria are celebrating her. Wow!

May we repeat that the artiste popularly known as Sade (pronounced /ʃɑːˈdeɪ/ shah-DAY) is the same Helen Folasade Adu, OBE, who was born in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria on the 16th day of January in 1959. Her father Bisi Adu, was a Yoruba Nigerian lecturer in economics, and her mother Anne Hayes, an English district nurse.

She is not new to the Grammy Awards since she won the Grammy for the Best New Artist in 1986 with the debut album, Diamond Life that has sold over 50 million albums. Sade is the most successful solo female artist in British history.

Soldier of Love went straight to number one on the US Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 502,000 copies in the United States and it is Sade’s first US number-one debut, and was at the top of music charts in several other countries in the world. For more details I have posted the official news release on the success story.

Sade’s Highly Acclaimed SOLDIER OF LOVE Marches On With Two Grammy Nominations

NEW YORK, Dec. 2, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — On the heels of an epic year for Sade, the band’s platinum selling SOLDIER OF LOVE, marks another milestone today by garnering two Grammy nominations for Best Pop Vocal by a Group for “Babyfather” and Best R&B Vocal by a Group for “Soldier of Love”. Holding down the top spot on the charts for three weeks upon its release, the critically acclaimed album takes its rightful place among the vast collection of iconic Sade albums.

After a decade out of the spotlight, Sade’s eighth album, SOLDIER OF LOVE exploded onto the charts in February and instantly made music history. The album ranked in the top 10 among Billboard’s 200 making them the first group since Led Zeppelin to hold this accomplishment. The attention grabbing first single “Soldier of Love” made radio history debuting at # 11 on the Urban Hot AC chart, making it the highest debut of the decade and the third highest all-time on the Urban Hot AC chart. “Soldier of Love” also debuted at # 5 on the Smooth Jazz airplay chart while also becoming the first ever vocal to hit # 1 on the Smooth Jazz Top 20 Countdown.

Entertainment Weekly featured SOLDIER OF LOVE in their “Must List” and gave the album an “A”, Rolling Stone wrote, “it’s unimpeachably excellent,” and The Boston Globe calls it, “a rich and rewarding album.” But the accolades don’t stop there. Associated Press raved, “like a long-ago lover not quite forgotten, Sade has returned to steal our hearts with more beautiful, uncategorizable music,” Billboard was quoted as saying, “it’s been 10 years since Sade released an album, but be forewarned – the giant has awoken,” while People Magazine reminds us that “Sade remains the voice of comfort to the wounded heart.”

Sade recently announced their highly anticipated return to the world’s stage. The North American leg, produced by Live Nation, begins on June 16th in Baltimore, Maryland at the 1st Mariner’s Arena. Tickets are on sale at

Known for their one of a kind timeless sound, Sade has enjoyed phenomenal success both internationally and stateside throughout the span of their twenty-five year career. Since the release of their debut album, Diamond Life in 1984 the band has seen all five of their studio albums land in the Top 10 on Billboard’s Top 200 Album Chart selling a total of more than 50 million albums worldwide to date. They’ve been nominated for American Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards and have won three Grammy Awards – first in 1986 for Best New Artist, then in 1994 for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group for “No Ordinary Love”, and again in 2002 for Best Pop Vocal Album with Lovers Rock.

Madonna to Open Second Hard Candy Fitness Center in Moscow

NEW YORK, Dec. 9, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — Madonna, in partnership with her manager Guy Oseary and Mark Mastrov, Chairman of New Evolution Ventures (NeV), announced the opening of the second Hard Candy Fitness Center in Moscow which is projected to open in mid-March 2011. The new facility will be a beautifully designed and unique 35,000 square foot space located near Red Square. Moscow’s Hard Candy Fitness will also include a partnership with Irina Razumova, founder of the well know Russian chain Planet Fitness. The news of the Moscow location comes on the heels of a successful grand opening for the brand’s premiere location last week in Mexico City, which featured a special dance class taught by Madonna.

“It’s especially exciting to have the second Hard Candy Fitness open in Moscow as I really enjoyed the city and the people when I visited during my ‘Sticky & Sweet Tour.’ Working in collaboration with the experts at NeV and Irina, I know that we will create the ideal workout environment in Moscow that represents my health and fitness philosophy as well as include innovative and inspiring programs,” commented Madonna.

Mastrov, his partner Jim Rowley of NeV, along with Madonna and Oseary are in the planning stages of opening 10 additional Hard Candy locations in Russia, Brazil, Argentina, Europe and Asia. They are currently exploring opportunities around the globe for facilities that will offer a unique member experience in all aspects including curriculum, environment and fashion.

Throughout her career, Madonna has been devoted to fitness and well being. Having worked out in hundreds of gyms around the world, she developed a strong vision on what the ideal exercise, dance and workout environment should look like. The vision took shape during an initial meeting between Mark Mastrov, the innovator behind some of the World’s best known Fitness Brands and Guy Oseary early in 2008. Mastrov has built a fitness empire of over 1100 clubs in over 20 countries.

“Our goal is to create an environment around the world inspired by Madonna’s vision and high standards. Hard Candy Fitness Centers will be a reflection of Madonna’s point of view and will reveal her input on every detail including music, design and class curriculum. Madonna’s touch will be everywhere,” stated Mastrov.

The Moscow Hard Candy Fitness Center along with others in the planning stages will include proprietary Hard Candy Fitness programming inspired by Madonna and her dance team, a Bike Studio as well as a Mind Body Studio, featuring The Great Wall, where members can practice BarWorks, Sculpting, Capoeira and the newest trends in Yoga. It will also house a healthy alternative Juice Bar/Cafe and lavish locker rooms.

Members will benefit from state of the art cardiovascular equipment with personal viewing screens, more than 60 pieces of strength equipment/free weights and the best group fitness, functional training accessories using brands including Precor, Marpo Kinetics, Hoist, Free Motion, StarTrac and TRX suspension training.

“We are so excited and honored to be able to open the Hard Candy Fitness brand here in Moscow. Madonna has been an inspiration for us all and we can’t wait to bring this beautiful facility to life,” said Irina Razumova, partner with Hard Candy Fitness and NeV.

Press Conference Information

Mark Mastrov and Irina Razumova will conduct an official press conference at the RIA Novosti Moscow agency on Dec. 13, 2010 at 13:00.

Susan Boyle’s The Gift Returns to Number 1 on the Billboard 200 Best-Selling Albums Chart

Acclaimed Singer’s Christmas Collection Is Number 1 On Billboard Holiday Albums Chart For Fourth Week In A Row

NEW YORK, Dec. 8, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — Susan Boyle’s The Gift , the fastest-selling holiday album in history, has returned to the Number 1 spot on the Billboard 200. The Gift originally debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard 200 immediately following its domestic release on November 9, retaining its position the following week. The album is now back for its third week (out of four) at Number 1 in the US, selling 271,500 copies during the past week.

(Photo: )

In addition, The Gift is holding strong in its fourth straight week at Number 1 on the Billboard Holiday Albums chart.

The Gift’s return to the top of the Billboard 200 follows the news of Susan’s GRAMMY® nomination, the first of her career, in the Best Pop Vocal Album category for I Dreamed A Dream , her debut album. Susan’s competition in the category includes Justin Bieber’s My World 2.0, Lady Gaga’s The Fame Monster, John Mayer’s Battle Studies and Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream.

When Susan’s The Gift (SYCO/Columbia Records) entered the both official UK chart and the US Billboard 200 chart at Number 1 in November 2010, it became the fastest selling holiday album, on both sides of the Atlantic, of the SoundScan era.

Released nearly a year to the day since the release of her debut, Susan Boyle’s The Gift began mirroring the achievements of its predecessor when it became the Number 1 album in the US and the UK less than 12 months after I Dreamed A Dream had achieved the same feat on both sides of the Atlantic. Not only had Susan become the first female artist ever to hold the Number 1 album spot in the US and UK twice in under a year, but she was the only artist of any gender in the history of music to have reached this pinnacle since the Beatles in 1969.

Taylor Swift is the New Face of New COVERGIRL Cosmetic Line, NatureLuxe

Newest COVERGIRL and multi-platinum singer-songwriter, Taylor Swift, to appear as face of new generation makeup line

Hunt Valley, MD — December 8, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — On the year that marks the beauty giant’s 50th anniversary, COVERGIRL cosmetics announces multi-platinum artist and 4-time GRAMMY award-winning star, Taylor Swift, will represent a new generation of luxury makeup — COVERGIRL NatureLuxe. The line, launching January 2011, includes a Silk Foundation and a Gloss Balm, both delivering a perfectly polished makeup look and a lightweight feel. The products were inspired by a new definition of luxury seen in both beauty and fashion that moves away from overstated, heavy opulence to simple, high-quality experiences.

“Taylor’s naturally polished and beautiful look fits perfectly with the new luxury makeup line,” said Vince Hudson, General Manager, COVERGIRL Cosmetics. “We specifically designed this line for women who, just like Taylor, want high quality products that flatter her lifestyle and environment. NatureLuxe provides luxury that isn’t extravagant, but rather simple, modern elegance that is inspired by nature.”

Swift’s ads for NatureLuxe will appear beginning in January 2011. Swift says, “I’m really excited for people to discover the new NatureLuxe line from COVERGIRL! The Silk Foundation and Gloss Balm are really light and fresh, they feel amazing on my skin.”

The NatureLuxe Silk Foundation is for the woman who wants a full-coverage foundation that looks polished, yet feels lightweight. The formula contains hints of natural jojoba and rosehip extracts along with cucumber water — which is a lighter, more luxurious alternative to a heavier feeling emollient. These ingredients were chosen due to their inherent properties: cucumber water is exchanged for a heavier emollient because it is refreshing and light-feeling to balance creaminess on application. Jojoba and rosehip extracts were chosen for their indulgent experience. The new Gloss Balm is a luxuriously lightweight blend containing mango butter, shea and other butters in exchange for heavier feeling emollients. The formula provides a light, silky application and a luxurious lip feel and finish that isn’t heavy or sticky.

Pat McGrath, Global Creative Design Director, P&G Beauty, loves the NatureLuxe line for creating the perfect naturally polished makeup look. “The Silk Foundation is slightly matte with a subtle dewiness, which is what you need to create the polished skin effect on the runway or for everyday. The foundation blends effortlessly on the skin and can be applied in layers for sheer to full coverage.” McGrath said, “I love that the Gloss Balm brings together the creamy feel of a balm with gorgeous colour and a hint of shine. The shade palette is versatile whether women want a touch of soft colour or a richer, sheer colour.”

Other experts in the cosmetics industry agree. In an unbranded survey, professional makeup artists were asked to evaluate the new Foundation and Balm. 8 out of 10 professional makeup artists agreed that NatureLuxe Silk Foundation provided a luxurious skin finish and a light, luxurious feel while 7 out of 10 professional makeup artists would recommend NatureLuxe Silk Foundation to their clients. 8 out of 10 professional makeup artists agreed that NatureLuxe Gloss Balm is an exciting new way to get beautiful sheer color and the luxurious lightweight feel of a balm in one and would recommend NatureLuxe Gloss Balm to their clients.

NatureLuxe Silk Foundation and Gloss Balm will be available at mass retailers nationwide beginning January 2011. Visit for more information on COVERGIRL Taylor Swift and the new cosmetics line, NatureLuxe.

If I Were President: My Haitian Experience, the New Six Song EP From Wyclef Jean, Available on the iTunes Store

Video for First Single, “Election Time,” Filmed in Haiti

NEW YORK, Dec. 7, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — Columbia Records will release If I Were President: My Haitian Experience , the new six song EP from Wyclef Jean, available on the iTunes store today.

(Photo: )

(Logo: )

If I Were President: My Haitian Experience , includes “Election Time,” a provocative new universal song written in the wake of Wyclef’s recent attempt to run for president in Haiti. The track is currently streaming here:

“This song is inspired by Pink Floyd’s ‘Another Brick In The Wall,’ with the chant, ‘We don’t need no education,'” says Wyclef Jean. “It is also inspired by Fela Kuti’s ‘Zombie.’ It’s the voice of the youth. It is the voice of this generation. It’s the artist once again doing what the politicians should be doing. This is about inspiring the voice of this generation.”

“Election Time” arrives with an extraordinarily powerful and beautiful video lensed in Haiti. Wyclef teams up with Haitian director, Steve Halloun to co-direct the clip. Halloun, a former student of the University of Miami Film School, like Wyclef, is deeply concerned with helping Haiti on all fronts. The video created jobs for local residents, including the actors and technical staff, while showing the world unfamiliar pictures of his native country.

“I have to show all the sides of Haiti,” Wyclef Jean says. “There is still beauty in Haiti and I have to show the beauty and the ugly reality that is going to change. It will change.”

November was “Election Time” in many countries around the world including in both of Wyclef’s countries–the United States and Haiti, where the November 28th general election holds great historic import. “It means the rebirth of my country. It means that the young people can bring about change,” said Wyclef prior to the Haitian general election. “I would want to tell the youth of Haiti to go out and vote. We have had a long history of dictatorship in Haiti. It’s not a Haitian right to vote that we are talking about. We are talking about a world right. Take your right. Your true weapon is your voting card. Use your weapon and use it wisely.”

If I Were President: My Haitian Experience is a family affair, co- executive produced by Wyclef and his brother, Sedeck Jean. The two started together and then went separate ways in their careers until the Earthquake of January 2010 reunited them musically. Sedeck Jean is also featured in the “Election Time” video.

Wyclef describes If I Were President: My Haitian Experience as “The life story of an immigrant. It’s for everyone who has had to leave one place and adapt to another. It’s about the refugee in all of us trying to fit in. But it’s not all sorrowful. In life, there is love and hate, war and peace. It’s both sides. This is the continuation of my music and it represents both sides. It’s for all my fans. It’s for those who love me for ‘Gone ‘Til November’ and ‘Hips Don’t Lie,’ too.

“Every great album to me is inspired by real events. It’s about what you’ve seen and experienced. They were done by the greats who came before me: Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Fela Kuti. The music has to be real. Fela Kuti used his music as a tool for development of his people. You need to relate to the culture. If I Were President: My Haitian Experience is about relating to the culture of Haiti which translate to the world.”

Wyclef Jean plans a world tour in 2011. “The Haitian Experience ” tour will include, “The music, the art, the culture and definitely the carnival,” says Jean.

Haitian-born Wyclef Jean is a Grammy Award-winning songwriter/musician/producer, humanitarian, Goodwill Ambassador to Haiti, and founder of Yele Haiti. A founding member of the pioneering hip-hop group Fugees and prolific solo artist, Wyclef has effortlessly crossed genres, generations and geographic boundaries with his music.

In 2005, Wyclef Jean created Yele Haiti to provide aid and assistance to his native Haiti. Yele Haiti is a grassroots movement inspiring change in Haiti through programs in education, sports, the arts and environment. Their community service programs include food distribution and mobilizing emergency relief. Wyclef coined Yele in a song and means “a cry for freedom.” The organization has been garnering international attention for its work including being featured in the Associated Press, USA Today, CNN, Fox News, NBC’s Today show, and on 60 Minutes. After the devastating earthquake in January 2010, all programs now focus on the relief and reconstruction of the island nation.

Viewing Nigerian TV stations is the most boring thing

4 Dec

The best advice is, view only the pay TV channels and avoid the nightmares of Nigerian TV stations identified above.

Viewing Nigerian TV stations is the most boring thing

Nigerian TV stations are still operating in the 20 century in terms of programming.
In fact, the only programmes they can boast of are the music videos they repeat until they get tired of doing so. They simply rotate music videos of all sorts, both the good and the bad once the “desperate for fame and fortune” artistes pay them to broadcast their music videos. They don’t know what makes a good music video. Then their poorly produced local dramas and soaps are irritating. They remind me of school plays in secondary schools.

The only local TV programmes I enjoy are the sports programmes and foreign programmes.
Nigerian TV stations had better local content in the 1970s and 1980s. I wonder why they have not improved their standards since the last century.

STV is like a family community television station established to promote family businesses and advertisers.
DBN TV is pathetic.
LTV is ordinary.
Superscreen is boring.

The best programmes on Nigerian TV are the reality shows copied from the US and the UK and sponsored by the telecom operators competing for the over 85 million users of GSM phones in Africa’s most populous country.

There is scarcity of originality in the entertainment industry. Most of the so called Nollywood dramas and B movies and the music videos are parodies of foreign productions.

The best Nigerian music channel is Sound City, but the trademark name is not original, because there is Sound City, a Sacramento-based entertainment company founded in 1988, and the two more others like Sound City Music and Entertainment and Sound Tajudeen Adepetu has made a success from using the trademark name in Nigeria.

Music Africa is a TV jukebox without head or tail. Why not sit down and do a proper production with a format.
You wonder why they cannot sit down and have TV prorammes workshops and develop their own original music video programmes with original local content and not music videos of lip-synching copycats of American and British Hip-hop artistes dubbing prerecorded music in keyboards and singing over the tracks like voice over artistes of radio commercials.

A retard or nitwit uses his mother tongue to rap over dubbed and copied sound tracks of American or British artistes and the hordes of ignorant listeners hail him as a new hip hop star. But unknown to them, the clever sound engineers are only pirating the sound tracks of foreign musicians without credit and they call it sampling.

The other desperados are just aping the American or foreign artistes they see on MTV, Trace and other foreign channels without making efforts to create their original own sounds.
They have even dubbed themselves as the Hip-hop generation, but they are only copycats and apes of Western entertainment.

Do not be surprised if you see a Nigerian GRAMMY Awards or Nigerian Academy Awards tomorrow. Nigerians are notorious for dubbing, copying and stealing trademark names with impunity, because even their lawmakers break their own laws and the law enforcement agents are their accomplices or partners in crime in a corrupt society without rules and without scruples.

The programme directors, producers and presenters should either be sacked or sent to the BBC or ABC for training on television programming.
The absence of TV Ratings makes the situation worse.

The concert film, with it’s never-before-seen, intimate footage of the star around the world, played on big screens in select cities around the country on November 18, the two-year anniversary of the release of the multi-platinum I AM…SASHA FIERCE album, which has sold more than six million copies and 15 million digital singles worldwide, while earning a record-breaking six Grammy Awards, the most ever for a female artist in a single year, in 2010.

ABC Television’s broadcast version of Beyonce’s I AM…WORLD TOUR, aired on Thanksgiving evening, Thursday, November 25. The much-anticipated special was a ratings success for the network.

Produced, directed and edited by Beyonce for her own Parkwood Pictures, the I AM…WORLD TOUR concert film is an immersive entertainment experience, weaving together peak concert and tour footage from 108 shows, 78 cities, 32 countries, on six continents with 1.1 million fans in Europe, Asia, South American and the US to create the ne plus ultra Beyonce concert experience, seen from the artist’s perspective.

In addition to offering rare behind-the-scenes glimpses into the dynamic personal world of Beyonce on tour, the film features dazzling performances of more than twenty # 1 hits transformed for the stage, guest appearances by superstars Kanye West and Jay-Z, spectacular staging, costumes, lighting and production values.
